When women go through sudden hormonal changes like those that come with perimenopause, puberty, postpartum and even their monthly cycle, they’re at a higher risk for depression. In general, women are twice as likely as men to develop the condition. During peri-menopause, hormonal changes can significantly impact both physical and emotional well-being. As estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate, the menstrual cycle may become irregular, with variations in length, frequency, and flow. Beyond these physical changes, the decline in hormones also affects serotonin, a key brain chemical associated with mood regulation. Lower serotonin levels can lead to increased irritability, anxiety, and sadness.
Additionally, the hormonal shifts during this time may contribute to mood swings, making it more challenging to handle stress or situations that might not have been bothersome before. For individuals with a history of major depression, these hormonal dips could potentially trigger depressive episodes, emphasizing the importance of monitoring mental health during this transitional phase. It’s common to experience insomnia during menopause, partly because of night hot flashes. Poor sleep can make you up to 10 times more likely to become depressed, so mitigating any sleep issues you might experience will greatly assist with lifting your mood.
Some women also report symptoms of anxiety during this time. Anxiety involves constantly worrying that gets in the way of your day-to-day life. You may feel tension in your muscles, frequent sweating, or even nausea. Both depression and anxiety can make it harder to concentrate, sleep, and take care of yourself.
Vitamin D is well-known to help strengthen your stamina and lift your energy levels, so if you are finding that you are undergoing periods of low mood and lack of strength try to supplement your diet with additional foods containing Vitamin D or with herbal supplements. You will find your mental health improving while your body strengthens.
